USSR - July/August 1969
Why the Soviet Union? It is the one nation that challenges America on all Continents, possess the only formidable military force, threatens us with atomic weapons (remember the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962) – and preaches a communist ideology that is antithetical to all we believe in. Russian history is replete with pride and achievement (Peter the Great), with War and Peace, with fear and misery, with intellectual and cultural achievement – all mixed together. Very few Americans have been lured to Russia – and no non-government Russians ever visit the U.S. All these factors make this vast country that much more interesting.
